The Washington State Newborn Screening Program temporarily suspended its recommendation to conduct second screenings for infants who tested normal during their first newborn screening. However, the program still recommends second screenings for infants who are sick, premature, of low birth weight or exhibited abnormal values in their first screen. The suspension is effective as of April 1st and will remain in place until further notice. However, if a provider does conduct a second screening during a routine visit with a newborn, they should submit the test to the state laboratory for analysis. Please review this FAQ sheet for more information.
