Each year, WSHA celebrates someone who embodies the vision, dedication and spirit of Joe Hopkins, a pioneer in rural health care advocacy. We are honored to recognize Ron Rehn, Chief Administrative Officer at Providence Health Care, as the recipient of the 2024 Joe Hopkins Memorial Award.
Ron’s health care journey began in the lab at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital in 1978. His talent and commitment were evident, and soon led to new responsibilities and leadership positions. Today, Ron oversees Providence’s ministries in Stevens County, including Providence Mount Carmel Hospital, Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital and Providence DominiCare. His career is a remarkable 45-year testament to dedication, expertise and compassion.
Under Ron’s guidance, Providence Mount Carmel hospital received national recognition from the Chartis Center for Rural Health as a Top Critical Access Hospital three years running (2021-23). The honor — achieved during a historically demanding time in health care — speaks to Ron’s inspirational leadership.
Ron’s steady approach helped guide Stevens County through the COVID-19 pandemic, reassuring patients, staff and the public. In the face of an unprecedented challenge, Ron not only focused on health needs but created a sense of safety and stability for his community.
Beyond his work at Providence, Ron has been a dedicated and influential member of WSHA’s governance, serving on the WSHA Board and Rural Hospital Committee. Ron also helps shape future health care leaders as a clinical instructor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and as an adjunct instructor with Davenport University Online. Like Joe Hopkins, Ron’s work means more leaders will prioritize and advocate for the health of rural communities.
Ron Rehn shows what it means to be a health care leader, melding expertise with a deep commitment to service. On behalf of WSHA, I’m proud to honor him with the Joe Hopkins Memorial Award.
Thank you, Ron, for your remarkable contributions to rural health care.
