April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week, and Providence Swedish is observing the occasion with events across the state. At the First Hill campus, events will help caregivers, doulas and members of the larger community decompress, educate and celebrate. The first event, “Decompress” took place April 10, with the hospital providing a joyful, comfortable space for connection, prioritizing mental well-being and self-care. In attendance were peer support groups, opportunities for pregnant patient education, nurse group sessions, community group sessions, DMD (doctor, midwife, doula) Advocacy for pregnant patients, music and dancing, massages, yoga and an assortment of games.
The second event, “Educate,” held throughout the day April 12, brings in community speakers and caregivers sharing insights on promoting culturally affirming care for Black mothers, fostering a shared understanding and collaboration. The third event, “Celebrate,” also held throughout the day April 12, celebrates Black culture, showcasing various art forms, such as dance, music, drumming and art. All events are held in the hospital’s Glasier Auditorium.
There is also a full schedule of events in the Spokane area, kicking off on April 11 with events at Holy Family Hospital and Sacred Heart Medical Center. Each day will feature activities to illuminate the multifaceted black maternal health crisis through art, film, storytelling and educational initiatives. A conference will be held on Saturday, April 13, and the week will culminate with an Evening of Joy Gala on April 20.
Black Maternal Health Week is a time to recognize the unique health challenges Black birthing patients face. It’s also a time to advocate for better health outcomes for them. Black birthing patients are three-to-four times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related issues, and 60 percent of these deaths are preventable. (Tim Pfarr)
