Naloxone Distribution in Hospitals: A critical strategy for preventing overdose deaths

August 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Since 2SSB 5195 went into effect January 1, 2022, WSHA has supported hospitals in implementing processes to comply with the law and ensure patients at-risk of opioid-related harm are offered take home naloxone kits at discharge. Overdose deaths are preventable and one powerful way hospitals can prevent overdose is to ensure their naloxone distribution programs are successful.

The impact of overdose deaths stretches across our communities. International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), held annually on August 31st, serves as a global opportunity to honor the memory of those who have been lost to overdose and support the families and communities impacted by those losses. With hospitals serving as naloxone distribution sites, IOAD provides an opportunity to connect with the local community and raise awareness for overdose prevention.

Learning objectives:
• Review the importance of naloxone distribution from hospitals and the expectations outlined in 2SSB 5195
• Identify common barriers and common solutions to effective naloxone distribution
• Share innovations and lessons learned from hospitals across the state
• Provide recommendations for celebrating International Overdose Awareness Day in hospitals

Reach out to Brittany Weiner at brittanyw@wsha.org with any questions.

While we do periodically host learning events open to the public, please note this event is only open to hospital staff.
