The Washington DOH has released the 2023 Maternal Mortality Review Panel legislative report. RCW 70.54.450 directs an appointed panel to review death of people who died during pregnancy or within a year of pregnancy. From confidential case records and data, the panel determines which deaths were pregnancy related and which were preventable. Recommendations are published every three years in the Maternal Mortality Review Panel report. This year the panel developed six recommendations and activities for implementation to help reduce preventable maternal deaths and improve perinatal care for all. Even though Washington maternal Mortality rates are lower than the national rate, there is significant work needed to address critical disparities that persist.
